The government must not allow police violence against peaceful protesters and journalists.

Dnevnik published an open letter to Bulgarian academics, researchers and legal professionals abroad in support of the protests and the country’s democratization process. It was compiled and approved by all participants and includes 73 scientists from around 60 universities and organizations in 12 countries.

We follow the ongoing protests in Bulgaria with great enthusiasm, hope and a dose of anxiety. Good institutions are the foundation for long-term economic growth and a sustainable social and environmental environment. We have no doubt that Bulgaria can be a country based on clear rules and compliance with the law. Our future is not predetermined by the past. National prosperity is everyone’s responsibility.

We express our support for the protests in Bulgaria and their demands

by an independent judiciary, a transparent and accountable government and a free media.

We also support the right of people to express their opinions freely, which includes the right to peaceful protest. The government has a responsible obligation to guarantee these rights. Police violence against peaceful protesters and journalists must not be allowed. Bulgaria is a state governed by the rule of law, which must respect the law, its constitution and its obligations under international law, including respect for fundamental human rights.

We are concerned about the resistance to judicial reform,

what is manifested in a series of political parties, the Attorney General’s Office and the security services. With this in mind, we believe that Bulgarians abroad could be particularly helpful in providing an independent expert opinion on the country’s reform process.

We do not represent any political party or other interests. We firmly believe that when people are united by the right goal, they will find a way to achieve it.

For a better Bulgaria!
