Prime Minister Boyko Borissov was personally quick to explain that Brussels has not stopped millions for Bulgarian agriculture. The news about the suspension of BGN 350 million for agriculture was announced on Sunday in front of bTV by former Economy Minister Asen Vassilev in Marin Raykov’s office. He admitted that Bulgaria has surprisingly withdrawn BGN 5 billion in new debt because it expects other EU funds to stop.
“Either the government expects a very severe COVID crisis and a very severe global economic recession and is trying to borrow as a precaution before the capital markets close, or it is expected to halt some of the flows that fund the budget,” he added . Assen Vassilev noted on the occasion that Bulgaria is increasing its debt by another 5 billion.
Vassilev claims that there is already a European Commission decision on suspended funds in agriculture.
Immediately after his speech, Agriculture Minister Desislava Taneva joined the “120 minutes” program by phone, saying that not a single euro cent was stopped.
“We entered the electoral campaign too early, there are rules and ways to report on everything that is being done.”she added.
On Monday, the State Fund for Agriculture also issued a statement to the media that the money had not been detained.
Apparently, Taneva and the fund were not convincing enough, because later on Monday, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov decided to intervene in the dispute.
“I like to refute lies with facts. Apart from the fact that there is no money detained for agriculture and corruption in the absorption of European funds, we now receive the largest financial package to support farmers in Bulgaria. The funds from the UE have stopped, but under different management from our opponents, they are better at them. “Borisov wrote on Facebook.
He then clarified that the European Commission has reimbursed Bulgaria almost one billion euros to the State Fund “Agriculture”.
“The funds declared by the fund are 100% reimbursed by the EC and there is no delay in their payment. 769,963,833 EUR are returned to the SFA in the framework of direct payments (land subsidies) and market mechanisms The total amount of subsidies reimbursed under the Rural Development Program is € 227,971,534 “, Borisov also wrote.
He specified that payments for 2020 to farmers will begin on October 16 and the necessary funds have been provided.
