Will the monster Martin of Sotirya stay in the cell for life? The Supreme Court of Cassation is on the move
Relatives of 6-year-old Kristin, brutally murdered and raped, from the village of Sotirya in Sliven, wonder if Martin Trifonov, 21, will remain in a cell for life without ever being released again. On 14 September this year, the Burgas Court of Appeal upheld the severest possible sentence previously handed down by the Sliven District Court. There is only one more instance left, the last one, which must make a final decision on the murderer’s complaint. He asks for life imprisonment, but with the right to a replacement, which would give him the hypothetical opportunity to get out of jail one day and under certain circumstances. The magistrates of the Supreme Court of Cassation will decide whether to give him this opportunity.

6-year-old Christine’s death is probably
one of the most cruel
in the history of
humanity,
without sounding exaggerated. The data from the forensic medical examination of the child’s death is shocking even to the most hardened criminologists and pathologists. The girl was strangled, repeatedly hit in the head with a stone, during which her brain literally got drunk, pushed against the ground, disfigured and brutally raped. The evidence of the case shows that as a result of the form, the means and the mechanism of action against the victim, she experienced an indescribable horror from the first to the last moment, suffering pain and suffering much stronger in its intensity and characteristics than to the point of death, they are categorical from the state prosecutor’s office. Throughout the atrocity, and especially with the genital and anal injuries, Christine was conscious, experiencing excruciating pain and suffering and frantic fear for her life. This motivated the Prosecutor’s Office to classify the murder as committed with extreme cruelty and in a particularly painful way for the victim.
At around 1:30 p.m. on August 15, 2019, Assumption Day, little Christine holds two coins of 2 BGN each in her hand and happily walks with her favorite puppy to the Sotirya store. Her grandfather, who was helping in his neighbor’s garden at the time, told his granddaughter to buy two beers and take something for herself with the rest. A few hours earlier, 21-year-old Martin, who lives in a village area 1.5 km from Sotirya, was also sent to the store by his stepfather. She had to buy brandy for himself and something for himself. Thus, fate meets a murderer and a victim near the grocery store in the small town of Sliven. In addition to brandy, Martin buys three pitchers of energy drink, to which he is literally addicted. He then sits at a table outside and starts drinking, staying there for about 2 hours. When little Christine walks past him, Martin feels a strong sexual arousal and decides to satisfy his urge with the little boy. Wait for her to buy and follow her. He reaches her on a small bridge, standing to her left, and wraps one arm around her neck. He begins to suffocate her and the girl screams in terror. Then Martin sees a piece of plastic bread bag on the floor and puts it in the boy’s mouth. To weaken it, the monster grabs a large stone and places it on the boy’s head with both hands. Then drag the limp body under the bridge, choose a flat spot along the riverbed, and strip the victim completely naked. He wickedly ties her panties around her neck and continues with his atrocities.
He is surprised when he sees a man nearby and runs away. She returns to the village without electricity or water, where her family lives, while she throws away her blood-stained clothes and dresses others who are in a garbage can by the road. She is hungry, wants to eat, and then confesses to her mother that she killed a child. Take a bag of bread, sausage and tomato and disappear. However, she dropped her cigarettes next to the boy’s body, and they are typical, because her family lived extremely poor, they rolled tobacco. Martin is among the first suspects due to his criminal past. He was tried for attempted rape and fornication while still a minor and found guilty of robbery. After the police did not find him in the villa, a search was launched. The murderer was arrested the next day near the village and shot while trying to escape.
His grandfather’s neighbor found the boy in a coma in the ravine after two concerned people started looking for him in town. They manage to wake him up in seconds, spraying him with water, he opens his eyes and cries, but he loses consciousness again. He died in Sliven hospital a few hours later that day. Doctors insist that traumatic brain injuries were incompatible with life. In the course of the judicial investigation it became clear that the perpetrator understood his actions and their consequences. According to forensic and psychiatric experts, Martín had a mixed personality disorder with a predominance of antisocial personality disorder, but this is not a circumstance that should reduce his responsibility.
The defendant Trifonov ignored all moral and ethical standards, drastically violated the original human right to life of a child, without showing any sympathy and without any contribution from the victim.
He appeared
extreme rage,
fierceness and
sadism
There is no area on the child’s head, body and limbs that has not been cruelly traumatized, the prosecution alleged during the case at the Burgas Court of Appeal. The judging panel fully confirmed the verdict of the Sliven District Court. There, on January 30, 2020, the case was brought under summary procedure. Martin pleaded guilty, probably hoping to reduce his sentence by a third. However, changes in the legislation follow and the possibility of conducting an abbreviated judicial investigation in such serious crimes is eliminated.
“We urge the court to maintain life in prison without parole. Our cause was and will be until the end: all murderers will receive severe sentences,” Kristin’s grandmother, Milka Georgieva, tells the media.
After the murder of her granddaughter, she writes letters to him every day in a special notebook. On July 14 of this year, when the case entered the Court of Appeal on an appeal from Martin Trifonov, Grandma Milka wrote: “Good morning, my sunshine. Today we go to Burgas. I don’t want to be a burden to you, but you should know that the case against the evil one will be heard today. Take care of us, grandparents.
Now Milka waits, prays, and wonders what letter she will write to Christine when the court saga is finally over.
