The “Caucasus 2020” command and strategic personnel exercise has begun in the Russian Armed Forces, the ministry said, adding that the main actions of the troops within the maneuvers will be in the internal training grounds of the Russian Southern Military District. The exercises will involve militaries not only from Russia, but also from Armenia, Belarus, China, Myanmar and Pakistan. The number of the foreign contingent does not exceed 1000 people. Representatives from Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Sri Lanka will be present as observers.
In the first stage of the exercise, the military authorities will plan actions in response to the conditional political situation and will work on interaction with the participating countries. In the second stage, the tasks for the management of the troops in the conduct of joint combat operations will be resolved.
The exercises are planned to resolve the deployment of a military group from a coalition of countries to ensure military security in southwestern Russia. The Caucasus 2020 exercise will end on September 26 and will be led by the Russian Chief of the General Staff, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, who is also Russia’s First Deputy Minister of Defense.
