Vice President Veselin Mareshki, who was sentenced to four years in prison, also lost a lawsuit brought by him and his mother, Veska Mareshka, against journalist Valya Ahchieva.

In a series of 7 “open” programs at BNT in 2017 and 2018, Ahchieva revealed in detail a scheme for trading medicines imported to Bulgaria at low prices, repackaged and re-exported abroad. Mareshki was affected and stressed by the investigation, and his mother, a songwriter from the old city, became upset and stopped singing. They filed a lawsuit against Akhchieva. However, the journalist was acquitted in two cases by the Sofia District Court and the Sofia Municipal Court. Within a month, the losers can also appeal to the Supreme Court of Cassation, which should decide whether to allow their appeals.

“For me, and I guess for many of the journalists, the latest decision of the Sofia City Court presided over by Zdravka Ivanova is extremely important because it pays attention to our work,” Valya Akhcheva told Trud yesterday. “For the first time, it is pointed out that this is freedom of expression, exercised in all its scope, that good practices have been followed, documents have been examined, interested parties have been sought … Journalistic freedom also includes the possible recourse to a certain degree of exaggeration or even provocation, ”Ahchieva added.
