The cyclone in Greece caused great damage, so far no one has been injured

Mediterranean cyclone Ianos has caused significant damage in western Greece, but no one is currently injured, said Deputy Minister of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias, quoted by the online edition of the Kathimerini newspaper.

On the Ionian islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca, there were power outages as a result of bad weather.

The strongest gusts occurred on the three islands and in the western part of the Achaea region of the Peloponnese, where their speed reached 80 km / h. The greatest amount of rain fell in Ithaca / 86 mm /, but the latest data is at 4 in the morning, because due to power outages the weather stations do not report updated information.

The fire service reported numerous citizen signals of downed trees and flooded houses, but there were no reports of people in distress.

In Ithaca, a Swiss-flagged ship was blown away by a strong wind and crashed onto a rocky shore, but the two people who sailed it managed to swim to shore and are fine.

“We remain fully prepared,” said Hardalias, adding that the next nine hours are essential for the development of the situation.

According to him, the cyclone will affect the regions of Magnesia, Arcadia and possibly Phocis, and as of Saturday the storm will dominate Attica and Evia, where a large amount of rain is expected.

Strong Tropical Storm Janos is expected to wreak havoc across the country for the next two days.

The previously expected wind gusts had an average duration of 130-150 km / h. They can go up to 200 km / h in some areas. Precipitation can exceed 300 l / m2.

These cyclones in the Mediterranean are called “medicine”, which comes from the English word for hurricane – hurricane and Mediterranean Sea (Mediterranean Sea). These storms are weaker than the strongest hurricanes in the ocean, but they cause serious damage to the countries of southern Europe.

Greek authorities have issued a warning to citizens living in places affected by previous severe storms in the country to temporarily head to a safer location.
