Parliament finally approved the proposal for a minimum unemployment benefit of BGN 12. The proposal is included in the update of the State Social Security Budget Law for 2020, which will be considered in first reading.
So far the cash benefit was BGN 9.00. The increase is expected to come into effect from October 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. The expenditure required for the three-month period is estimated at around BGN 12,000.0 thousand, that is. about 4,000.0 thousand BGN per month. The deputies decided that the unemployment benefits of the Social Security Code, granted with a start date from October 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020 inclusive, are paid for a period of 7 months.
The changes are part of a package of socio-economic measures by the government in relation to the situation that has arisen due to the spread of COVID-19, which is aimed at supporting the unemployed in a pandemic.
The MPs rejected the BSP’s proposal that the minimum unemployment benefit be BGN 17.
