Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said today that he had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to help him supply Belarus with various new types of weapons, the Belarusian news agency BelTA reported.
“I have asked the Russian president to supply various new types of weapons,” Lukashenko told Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in Minsk.
The president did not specify what weapons he had requested from Putin, Reuters reported, recalling that the Belarusian leader was facing massive protests in his country after disputed presidential elections there in August.
“We can keep the situation under control not only in Belarus, but also at our borders,” Lukashenko was quoted as saying by BelTA and BTA.
Later, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to a journalistic question that Belarusian leader Lukashenko had not raised the issue of arms supply during talks with Vladimir Putin.
In the meeting with Shoigu, the Belarusian president suggested that the two countries continue to organize the “Slavic Brotherhood” military exercises, currently taking place near Brest, and consider other joint exercises.
Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus since 1994, also said that new presidential elections will be held once a new constitution is adopted.
The Belarusian president’s statement comes two days after his meeting with Putin at the Black Sea resort of Sochi, in which the two leaders agreed that Russia would provide a $ 1.5 billion loan to Belarus.
