Europe must defend democracy in Bulgaria. This was stated by the former US ambassador to Bulgaria, James Pardew, of Politico.
The diplomat believes that the EU must show that it is in line with Bulgaria’s demands for true democracy. It is also important to support the steps to achieve it.
According to him, on the surface, the country looks like a democracy. However, this is not the case in reality.
The country’s political and judicial system has rotted. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov describes himself as a destroyer of the country’s opposition through a system similar to a one-party state.
The prime minister and his entourage can be described as a mild form of Vladimir Putin. Similar tactics are used, although a little softer. The diplomat believes that as long as Donald Trump is president, the United States will not support democratic ideas in Bulgaria.
