Kiril Ognenski from the town of Bistritsa is called to look for lost tourists and corn trampled by cows

“24 Hours” has been awarded “Worthy Bulgarians of the Year” since 2003.

During these 18 years, during which more than 700 people received the prestigious title, the initiative has emerged as a cause that affirms the good of the Bulgarians and meets the new heroes of our time.

On March 16 we announced that this year’s “Decent Bulgarian” award is collective: for all Bulgarian doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, radiologists, ambulance drivers and front-line people.

The good in Bulgaria, however, has many faces. See the story of Kiril Ognenski, 46, who for a second term is mayor of the town of Bistritsa, which is 3 km from Dupnitsa and has almost 2,000 inhabitants.

TThe phone of the mayor of the Dupnitsa village of Bistritsa keeps ringing. It is included 24 hours a day and there is no unanswered message on your Facebook account.

This is Kiril Ognenski, 46, who for a second term runs the town, which is located 3 km from Dupnitsa and has about 2,000 inhabitants.

A few days ago, Kiko, as she is called by villagers, friends and acquaintances, participated in a search operation and managed to find a missing woman from Dupnitsa. One morning, just before 6 o’clock, a friend from France called him for help. To their friend

and could not find it. The mayor is the last hope as a man who knows the whole area around Dupnitsa and Rila Mountain.

“I immediately gathered a dozen men from the village and we went looking for her. A tractor driver called me who the night before had seen a car fall into a ditch next to the Vangel Fountain road, and a woman got out and continued walking towards the stables in the Roma neighborhood. We quickly found the woman and there were drug vials next to her. I don’t know if he drank them, but he was obviously not in good condition, ”said the mayor.

And he explains that he has never refused to help for anything or anyone, they seek him out for everything that people cannot handle on their own.

Some time ago he again participated in a search operation for two tourists lost in Rila. The women confused the way around Fenerka Peak and after a search that lasted until 1 a.m. after midnight, they found them.

Years ago, mountain rescuers called him for help from a tourist with a broken leg, who also lost track of where he was. Ognenski reassembled a faithful company and began a search for the mountain. They found the tourist under Ivan Vazov’s hut and took him down.

“I know the whole area, all the trails, all the places. I am not a hunter, but I am an avid mountaineer. I take all my free time to be in nature, where I rest and recharge my batteries”, says Kiko, who served in the Border Troops – from there he learned order, organization, orientation in places.

As a border guard, he also took first aid lessons. This, in turn, helped him rescue a man bitten by an insect in the forest.

Later, Ognenski was in Dupnitsa hospital with a microinfarction.

“It was all wired to the equipment in me. An acquaintance called me and said:” Kiko, Getzata is on the bike in the forest, but something bit him and he is very ill. “

I got into the jeep that I had left in front of the hospital, picked up a friend and we left. On the way, I literally ran to a store and bought two bottles of water. We found Getsata in the forest, she was unconscious. We call an ambulance. During this time, I allegedly poured water out of the bottles and it foamed. It turned out that I quickly bought a tonic. We put him in the jeep and an ambulance met us on the way. The doctor gave him 3 injections while he was still there and the man came back to life ”, recalls the mayor of the town the situation of the heart attack.

However, he does not want to remember what happened in the hospital after they saw that the patient was missing.

“When I came back, it was terrifying –

I went crazy

but I couldn’t help but leave when someone needed help, “added Ognenski.

However, she did not respond to an “invitation” to bathe a baby at 2 am. An angry mother because there was no water in her house, wrote a message: “Come and bathe the baby.” And in Bistrita there are very often accidents and the fountains are drying up.

The water supply system was built in 1936. Now the replacement of about 1/3 of the pipes in the village, 5 km, has started and the hope is that they will all be replaced gradually.

“Now the repairs also have to stop the water, but people cannot understand it. Many of them are nervous and do not want to wait until the work is finished. On Friday of last week at 6.30 pm they received a message from a man from the town who complained that there had been no water for 3 days and their neighbors had it.

“I immediately went to see where the problem was, but I was surprised they hadn’t had water for 3 days, and he wrote to me on Friday night. I called the company, people came, but it turned out that the problem was not in the pipes, but in the detour to the house, ”says Ognenski.

You won’t forget how an angry villager complained that the dirty canal was blocked and returned. It immediately took a teacher to see what the problem was.

Found in

jacket tubes

“He told me that he stuffed the ‘coat’ so that the pipe wouldn’t fill up with stones, and he forgot to remove it,” Kiko said.

It shows a message received at 11:20 pm by a woman complaining that the cows had crushed her corn. They signal him to set a dumpster on fire at night and he immediately leaves for the scene.

His wife and two children, a daughter and a son aged 14 and 12, are already used to being available to people around the clock.

Until last year, every winter he shoveled the snow off the streets with his personal jeep, to which he attached an oar. The first year he became mayor, heavy snow fell in December. Then he would get up at 4 or 5 in the morning and go with a shovel to shovel around the kindergarten and near the shops, so that people could pass when they went out in the morning.

The following winter, he found that it would not work with a shovel and adjusted the blade to the jeep.

The mayor of Bistrita surprised the locals when

in Halloween

showed up at work

with folk costume

“I did it because I am angry that we are celebrating more and more some foreign holidays and forgetting our traditions. We restored the Jordan Day tradition, but with the stipulation that all men wear traditional costumes. On St. George’s Day we also celebrate with costumes We must not forget that he is above all Bulgarian and respects the traditions ”, the governor is categorical.

In 2015, he ran for election as a BSP candidate and won the first round. However, last fall he came out independent and won once.

“I realized that for a mayor, whether in a town or a big city, party affiliation is irrelevant. People’s problems are the same and must be solved. “The division of parties does not lead to anything good,” said the mayor.

He always carries a portrait of Todor Zhivkov with him. There are several that he has found in the attics and basements of public buildings and schools.

“I do it because I don’t think we should deny what the managers did before us. Zhivkov’s time is part of our history and we should not erase it. Then there were bad things, but even today not everything is rosy. How do I know? Would today’s rulers feel if, after 50 years, someone denied everything they have done? That’s why I keep a portrait of Zhivkov, “Ognenski explains.

Every day

is on the street

he comes face to face with his compatriots and therefore has great authority among them. Some complain to him, others appreciate his cooperation. He does his best to create a true local community, not forgetting to organize celebrations, sacrifices in the church and educate the children by cleaning the tourist routes of Rila with them or by waving the Bulgarian flag on our national holiday.
