Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev

VAP referred the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry for an immediate inspection related to the logging of a centennial forest near the town of Kotel.

The sea is concreting. A century-old forest is being cut down in the mountains. Time to stop the destruction of Bulgaria’s unique nature! This was posted on Twitter by Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev.

Geshev’s statement is related to the news that the Supreme Administrative Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) filed a complaint in connection with media posts about a centuries-old forest cut down near the town of Kotel.

In accordance with article 145, paragraph 1, subsection 3 of the JSA, VAP referred the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry to carry out an urgent inspection related to the circumstances of the case. To clarify the case, it is necessary to study the activities foreseen in the forest management project, when and what species of trees are marked, what type of felling – selective, group, etc., what is the type of yield – to beat, veneer or plywood and what trees are precisely marked for, whether the felling has been coordinated with the RIEW, whether the percentage is up to 25% complete in view of the presence of a water supply zone, etc.

The information from the inspection should be summarized in a report, which should reflect the declared findings, the violations, the administrative and criminal proceedings initiated, as well as the measures to stop the violations. The report should be sent to the VAP as soon as possible.
