Many have probably heard of the dreaded insects in Australia. But what about New Zealand?
Judging from a find in the Whitaker Mountain Range in the Auckland area, the country also has something to boast about, for example a wasp’s nest the size of a two-seater tent, writes the New Zealand Herald.
The nest was found in a natural park near the wild Karekare beach. Experts believe that this “home of the wasps” has reached its impressive size in about two years. Tens of thousands of biting insects could live in it, reports BTA.
Sarah Gibbs, chief environmental advisor to the Auckland Council, said the nest was one of the largest she had ever seen.
“Fortunately, it is no longer active. It is unlikely to be repopulated as the queens have moved to a new home elsewhere,” Gibbs said.
The nest measuring 1 meter by 2 meters by 2.5 meters is made of sticks, bark and leaves.
Experts note that most wasp nests die in late fall, but the size of this “house” is quite large and impressive, and it could survive the winter.
Sarah Gibbs added that the discovery was a timely reminder to area residents of the threat that wasps pose to humans and animals.
Environmentalists urge park visitors who notice active wasp nests to notify specialized services.
