The UK and the EU will hold emergency talks in London today due to tensions over British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to cancel key parts of the Brexit deal.
British Deputy Prime Minister Michael Gove and European Commission Vice President Maroš Šefčovič will discuss in London how the planned Internal Market Law, which was published yesterday by the government, could affect the island of Ireland.
The law refers to the Protocol on Northern Ireland, which is part of the agreement signed to leave the EU, aimed at avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland.
Brussels wants clarification from London on the future implementation of the agreement.
Political observers said this morning that the outcome of trade talks, which meanwhile continue between chief negotiators Michel Barnier and David Frost, largely depend on what happens with the Internal Market Law.
Adherence to the signed documents is an absolute condition for Brussels to move forward.
Boris Johnson’s plans to turn his back on the clauses of an already signed international document have been harshly criticized not only in Europe.
Former Prime Minister John Major has pointed out that Britain risks losing its reputation as a country that keeps its promises.
The news of the emergency meeting comes a day after several European leaders harshly criticized the UK’s plans to violate parts of the Withdrawal Agreement agreed with the European Union.
