One died and seven were injured in the 90-minute attack
A Bulgarian was among the victims of a series of knife attacks in Birmingham on Sunday night, in which one was killed and seven people were injured. The name of Dimitar Bachvarov was announced yesterday at the start of the trial in the case.
Zefanaya McLeod, 27, was arrested for the attack. Police have not yet revealed what his motives were. He himself heard the charges against him, hiding his face with his hands, in a video link from the police station where he was detained.
Prosecutor Susan Llewellyn said the decision to charge him with the death of one person and the attempted murder of seven more was made as a result of evidence provided by the police. At this stage, the attacks are believed to have been carried out randomly and were not linked to organized crime or terrorism. They were held in various places in the center of the English city for 90 minutes.
The victim is an employee of the University of Sheffield. 23-year-old Jacob Billington was with a group of friends having fun when the attack began half an hour after midnight. He was fatally stabbed in the neck.
A friend of hers, also 23, was attacked on a nearby street. His condition remains critical, as is that of a 22-year-old woman. The rest are lighter and some have been discharged from the hospital.
However, no details were released. The judge just read their names. Besides Dimitar Bachvarov, these are Migle Dolobauskaite, Thomas Glassy, Michael Callahan, Shane Rawley, Rhys Cummings, and Ryan Bowers.
There is no evidence that the victims knew Zefanaya McLeod. Billington came to Birmingham briefly to visit a friend.
