Heavy traffic on the last of a series of weekends. Thousands returned home after the holidays. Traffic from the Black Sea coast to the interior of the country is the busiest. Entering Bulgaria from Greece is also problematic. Despite our Home Office announcement, the Ilinden-Exohi checkpoint remained closed today and the company announced that it was in protest.

Along with the increase in traffic after the three weekends, the police reported a high number of serious accidents since the beginning of the month. The most common reason: speeding.

“Since the beginning of the month there have been 141 serious traffic accidents. They have seriously injured and killed people. 168 people were injured, 16 died in 7 days. The numbers are disturbing. Real lives end on the road, we have to realize of that “. This was stated in a briefing by Inspector Lachezar Bliznakov of the Traffic Police.

Once again, he directed drivers to follow the rules behind the wheel. “Our appeals have become trivial sentences: slow down, keep your distance.” On Saturday, when we reported higher traffic than on Friday, there were several accidents in “Trakia” in many places at the same time and queues of kilometers “, said.

As of today, traffic has been restored on the South Arc of the Sofia ring road between Mladost and the Trakia highway. There is a serious traffic jam before noon, as all cars travel in one lane. Traffic had to be regulated by the traffic police.

The launching of part of the repaired section caused traffic jams in all directions towards Gorublyane. The road narrows sharply from three to one lane, but in the end it is better than it was until recently, completely closed, “said Sofia Deputy Mayor Doncho Barbalov.

After several months on the road from Pancharevo to “Gorublyane” it passed quickly and without obstacles, from today drivers will have to travel much longer.

The Road Infrastructure Agency believes that the launch of the section will facilitate a large part of the residents and guests of Sofia.

“These traffic jams that formed were nothing compared to those in Mladost and Gorublyane. You know how the traffic was here for several months,” said Rumen Sechanski, director of the Sofia Regional Highway Administration.

Many drivers and passengers trapped today agree. “Okay, it takes about ten minutes,” said one of them.

The section is 6 km long and is regulated by traffic lights. “After the launch of the route, these traffic lights will disappear and then the traffic will be much easier,” Sechanski said.

The new section should be operational by the fall of next year. Until then, if necessary, the traffic police will regulate the traffic.

Meanwhile, a woman died and three people, including a 6-month-old baby, were injured in a serious accident. The incident occurred shortly before 3 pm on the Maritsa road. They were all traveling by car in the direction of Haskovo. Near Harmanli, the car hit the railing and then flipped onto the roof. The woman died instantly and the three victims were denied hospitalization. One lane of the highway was closed for several hours.

There is a lot of traffic at the entrance to Greece. Despite the guarantees that as of today the Ilinden-Exohi checkpoint will be open for trucks and today the border remains closed.

Traffic in southwestern Bulgaria increased in the early afternoon. At around 3pm, the two main streams, Kulata and Bansko, met at the road junction near Simitli. Temporary plugs began to appear.

Among the most nerve-racking points was the E-79 tunnel near the town of Zheleznitsa, where cars abruptly slowed down and created the preconditions for accidents. Police presence has been intensified on the region’s roads to control the speed of cars.

And today there was no traffic to the Ilinden-Exohi border crossing. The reason: the Greek authorities once again did not fulfill their promise and did not lift the barrier at the border. This left dozens of carriers waiting in vain for trucks in front of the border crossing.

The Greek police at the border checkpoint explained that the order to keep the border closed was valid until 15 September. Until then, heavy trucks can only enter Greece through the Tower.
