Today begins the payment of 300 euros for each child in Germany. This is just one of the measures in the rescue package agreed in June to deal with the pandemic. Almost 18 million children will receive the supplement of 300 euros.

The supplement is part of a huge package of measures to tackle the crisis caused by the coronavirus.

It is about 300 euros, which will receive about 18 million children in Germany. 200 euros of the total amount will be paid in September, and the remaining 100 euros, in October.

Who and how will receive the family bonus

Requests to receive the money are not sent; payment is automatic.

The only prerequisite for receiving the amount is that this year, for at least one month, child benefits have been received, that is, the bonus of 300 euros will also be received by parents whose children are born before the end of the year.

“The specific date for the payment of the amount depends on the final figure in the number to receive benefits for children: it will start at zero. Almost 18 million children and young people are entitled to receive the bonus, and the total amount of payments is to billions.

However, many describe the measure as insufficient.

“The one-time bonus of 300 euros cannot even help families enough,” said Left Party MP Sabine Zimmerman.

It refers to the fact that the pandemic has further aggravated the situation of large families with lower incomes. According to Zimmerman’s calculations, based on official statistics, last year almost 40% of families with three or more children were at risk of poverty.

The director of the German Institute for Economic Research, Marcel Fratscher, notes that the bonus is not only very significant, but also “one of the most reasonable measures in the package to promote the economic situation.”

“This supplement will help families in need of crisis support quickly and decisively,” Fratscher said.
