This is how President Rumen Radev began his speech at the solemn ceremony in Plovdiv on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the Union.
We know from the Union, from all the history of the Renaissance, that lies, cunning, repressions and political intrigues cannot stop an awakened nation, which has headed towards its conscious future, said the head of state.
He stressed that while in Tarnovo free Bulgaria had acquired a Constitution, the Bulgarians of Eastern Rumelia were forced to have an organic Statute, a nefarious Constitution that assigned them the role of silent subjects. Union activists corrected this historic injustice, emphasized the head of state, adding that “in those days the revived Bulgaria showed the world how civilized, without violence, an enlightened people of the faith of our revivalists gathers under the common roof of its historic homeland and has no power to stop it. “
According to him, the victory of the Bulgarian captains over the foreign generals in the war that followed proved that the Union was an irreversible act and the Bulgarians were ready to defend their freedom.
