September 6 is one of the brightest and most important dates in the new Bulgarian history, and the Union is probably the most successful Bulgarian action in our recent history. So said the president (1997-2002) Petar Stoyanov in BNR.

“The unification act is the first common case of Bulgaria. All Bulgarian citizens at that time were under the Union flag. Let us remember that even during the April uprising not all Bulgarians agreed with the outbreak of the uprising. On the contrary, on the eve of the Union, the Bulgarian people are more united than ever, “said Peter Stoyanov.

Through a bloodless revolution, through a national rebound, Bulgaria increased its territory from 63 to 96 thousand square kilometers, Stoyanov added. According to him, this increase in area with the act of the Union is more than as a result of the next 4 wars that we fight.

The people of Plovdiv were aware that to unite Bulgaria, they had to make a painful sacrifice: the right to call themselves the people of Sofia, said Petar Stoyanov. Before the Union, the color of the Bulgarian intelligentsia lived in Plovdiv, but then things changed radically, he added.

The analogies with today are not easy. At that time, the Bulgarian political class was fully aware of its national ideal and did not hesitate, said President Stoyanov.

“As a result of the Union – Russia is against the Union, the Bulgarian people for the first time understand that our national interests do not always coincide with the national interests of Russia, and this is a geopolitical discovery. Until the Union in Bulgaria, the Russophobic word is not known, everyone is Russophile and this is quite natural. “

The union raises this important problem, which has not been solved to this day: the attitude of Bulgarian society towards Russia, said Peter Stoyanov.

“This attitude, especially in recent years, has ranged from extreme submission to extreme denial. Both approaches speak of a certain complex. We Bulgarians, it is time to have a clear, moderate and dignified attitude towards Russia, based in the conscious Bulgarian national interest. “

Unification is the only completely successful Bulgarian action, we will never achieve such a national unification and such definitive success, stressed Petar Stoyanov.
