By the end of the month, Bulgaria expects to receive new American tests, proving the presence of coronavirus in 15 minutes. The tests are very easy to do: it mixes in the student’s throat, for example, and after 15 minutes it becomes clear if there is a virus antigen. This was announced by the director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, Prof. Todor Kantardzhiev, to Nova TV.

“Four weeks ago, many young people fell ill in our country, at dances, nightclubs and public events, which did not comply with the measures. For 2 weeks we have many adults who infected the young people. Therefore, mortality in our country is increasing. “The number of new cases is decreasing, but we have a relatively high number of deaths. Now we benefit from the long and dry good weather, but in autumn we will not close at home, but we will have to learn to wear masks,” said Professor Kantardzhiev.

He also commented on when he thinks children should wear masks to school. For the little ones they are not mandatory, because their first job will be to start exchanging them with each other, but in the corridors, where there will be a crowd, the children will have to wear masks.

Regarding the festive events today, Professor Kantardzhiev recommended that people be outdoors, keep their distance and not kiss or hug, and that politicians give shorter speeches.

We are highly dependent on finding a vaccine because it is one way to control a respiratory viral infection and the other is an effective antiviral treatment. Already 90% of people follow the measures and know them. The remaining 10% are those who think they can go out and make an unreasonable and unscientific statement on television or, for example, show everyone on the tram that they can be without a mask, said Professor Kantardzhiev.

As for finding a vaccine, he believes that there is already light in the tunnel and it will be available no later than early 2021. A scientific publication with data on one of the Russian vaccines in development has been published in the most authoritative British medical journal. “All people who were tested received an adequate immune response,” said Professor Kantardzhiev.

He recalled that Bulgaria has signed a contract for the supply of millions of vaccines with Astra Zeneca. First, doctors in covid wards will be vaccinated, and then risk groups: people over 65, chronically ill and cancer patients.

Professor Kantardzhiev also spoke about an in-depth British study, according to which the highest risk of coronavirus is for people with cancer and cardiovascular diseases. However, this study found that the risk was lower for smokers. Professor Kantardzhiev also explained why: smokers have fewer receptors on cells that the virus can attach to. “This does not mean grabbing cigarettes now, but those who smoke should continue to smoke, but in moderation,” said Professor Kantardzhiev.
