The highest yields are found in northwestern Bulgaria
4,626,318 tons is the wheat produced for 2020. This is shown by official data from the Ministry of Agriculture for 100% of the harvested areas.
Due to the drought, the grain is about 1.2 million tons less than last year, when the harvest reached 5.8 million tons. However, there is enough for flour and feed, as well as more than 3 million tons for export.
The average yield of the 2020 harvest is 393 kg / dca. It is 24% lower than last year. However, preliminary analysis of the quality of the new grain shows that it has high baking qualities.
The highest yields of more than 500 kg / ha were recorded in northwestern Bulgaria: Montana, Vidin, Pleven, Lovech and Veliko Tarnovo. A total of 11.76 million decars were the areas with wheat in our country.
In the case of barley, the amount harvested from this year’s harvest exceeds 560 thousand tons of 1.38 million decars. The country’s average yield is slightly higher than that of wheat: 406 kg / ha. Rapeseed performs poorly. It has a production of 247 thousand tons and average yields of only 225 kg / ha.
The main damage to the fall crops was caused by the fall and spring droughts, the Ministry of Agriculture explained. According to data from the regional directorates of “Agriculture” as of August 31, due to damage due to drought, frost and hail, 350 investigation protocols were issued for 107,108 decars, which were reduced to 100% of the area. 84,892 wheat fields were completely destroyed, representing 0.7% of the crops. The damaged cereal fields, which are below 100%, are 953,968 decars. Those most affected by the drought are in the districts of Burgas, Dobrich, Varna, Sliven and Shumen.
At the end of the calendar year, farmers’ compensation for completely lost areas will be paid, the Ministry of Agriculture said.
