Day 57: The protest is alive, Eagle Bridge was blocked again

After the dramatic night, which ended with outbreaks of violence by anonymous provocateurs and the police, thousands again gathered at the same location in Sofia on Thursday night.

In fact, a small group of protesters gathered in front of the presidency building before noon with the shouts of “Renunciation” and “Mafia”. They tried again to block traffic on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, but the police pushed them away.

However, around 7:30 p.m., the traffic blockade became a fact. Protesters are also expected to rebuild the tent camp that was demolished the night before.

The police presence was impressive: a dense cordon of uniformed men was parked in the Plaza de la Independencia and in front of the entrances to the National Assembly and the Council of Ministers, as well as the gendarmerie cars.

However, the events of the previous night did not move the protesters and they re-filled the space from the so-called triangle of power to the construction of the old palace.

Borislav Sandov, co-chair of the Green Movement, who was among those arrested last night, spent 25 hours in a cell for two with six other people, all of whom were at the protest again tonight. in Sandov’s words, “even more inspired and even more motivated.”

“The aim of Borisov, Geshev and those who sent the security forces is to instill fear, but they will not achieve it. Not this time,” he said.

The protesters then marched. At 10 pm Orlov Most was blocked again and the reconstruction of the tent camp began, which was dismantled by the police last night.

However, it was later explained that the two tents installed would remain on the bridge only symbolically, without obstructing traffic. The decision was motivated by the upcoming start of the school year and the fact that the protesters don’t want to upset people. “Borissov and Geshev must know that at any moment we are ready to make Orlovgrad even bigger than before,” one of the protesters said into a megaphone.

Violence last night: “Ugly theater production of power”

“We had 57 days of peaceful protests and it is obvious that we are not in a bad mood. From the rostrum last night we repeatedly asked for an end to the violence, for the perimeter to be released, and for calm to remain, but this did not happen. I don’t really know why the police endured these attacks. However, to attack innocent people, we saw how many people were beaten and how many arrests there were. They also pulled out a water cannon, but they didn’t use it, “Arman Babikyan, one of the organizers of the anti-government protests, told a briefing in front of the presidential building.

He commented that the tension of last night’s protest was the result of “an ugly theatrical performance by the authorities, behind the backs of the Bulgarians, and by journalists that all of Bulgaria knows were gassed, and only the police do not know them.”

The fact that we were the organizers of a large part of the rally was not a useful step in such frank acts of violence, even though we had been the first with the bombs. The reason why the uniformed officers kept shooting at them for an hour and a half was precisely to show how bad the protesters were and that there were criminal elements among them, lawyer Nikolay Hadjigenov said.

“There were also many foreign media outlets at the protest, who saw what was happening in Sofia. Maybe Bulgaria is not Belarus, certainly not. But we have a leader who wants our country to look like Belarus. We continue the protests, the Bulgarians. they are proud and they won’t. bow down, “said Arman Babikyan. According to him, “the big blow for Borissov is that the people in Bulgaria are no longer afraid and say it out loud.”

Yesterday there were protests in 15 European cities, which is impressive, said Velislav Minekov. He asked “who called” to the protest last night those aggressive young people who threw various objects, cobblestones and stones at the gendarmerie and the police. We will refer what happened to the European Court of Human Rights, we will inform all the embassies of European countries, as well as the United States and the United Kingdom. We will also ask for a meeting with their ambassadors, “to tell them about this incident, which took us out of normal European countries and equated us with the dictatorships of Central Asia,” Minekov said.

“We are furious about what happened last night after this order from Geshev and Borisov to bleed the protest,” Velislav Minekov said in a video released that same day by the so-called Poison Trio.

“The provocateurs, the blood, the hot spray, the tear gas, the beaten women, all of this happened all day. This is all Borissov’s face. We have no spy teams, no police, no batons,” added Arman Babikyan in the video.
