Police officers injured in last night’s excesses during thousands of anti-government protests in Sofia said they waited an hour for an order from their superiors while homemade bombs were dropped on them. They claim that in all probability it is a group of provocateurs who arrived after 8 pm and mixed with citizens who normally protested. The three SDVR police officers, who spoke to journalists on Thursday, expressed their conviction that they were people who were deliberately seeking provocation and aggression with the police.
“At one point we wondered what was happening because we were bombarded for about an hour and we waited for some reaction from the bosses to take some actionbecause we are defending ourselves, but it is a whole hour of bombs. I’m talking, thrown on purpose, maybe more than 60-70 pumps“said DSVR police officer Ivan Manev.
According to him, the provocateurs were visible, at one point even the other protesters separated from them.
Manev said he was hit by a bomb that fell between his shield and that of his colleagues. After the outbreak, he received lacerations. They took him to ISUL, where his wound was treated, and then returned to the square, but he remained in the back rows.
Another gendarmerie officer, Stoyan Dimitrov, was injured in the same way. He said he had four bomb wounds. One of them was sewn in ISUL. “Most likely provocateurshe said, adding that he couldn’t see exactly what had happened.
According to Andon Hristov of the gendarmerie, the situation was quiet until 8 pm. But then a group of young people appeared. They began shooting first with eggs, then with plastic and glass bottles, as well as with homemade bombs.
“This, as well as the insults against us, we put up with for an hour and a half. The bad thing was that these people had mixed with normal citizens who had really come out to protest.Hristov explained. According to him, this is the reason why no action should be taken, because normal people would suffer too. He said he was hit by a broken cobblestone.
So far, the Interior Ministry leadership does not explain why the order to act was delayed for more than an hour. It is also unclear why no one has tried to isolate groups of provocateurs beforehand, provided there is preliminary information about their appearance, and they can be easily identified.
None of the three policemen participated in the arrest of the protesters and did not comment on complaints from people who were at the protest that some of them had been subjected to police violence. All three said that they and their colleagues worked professionally the night of the protest.
