During the day 35 people were detained, 30 of whom were part of a political force whose prosecution requested the suppression (Vazrazhdane Party). These are not peaceful protesters, but ultras brought in from the province, said SDVR director Georgi Hadjiev at a briefing on the occasion of the protest titled “Great People’s Uprising”, which began at 8 am.

Most of the protesters are criminals and the crimes are of any kind, he added.

According to Hadjiev, despite numerous calls from the police for a peaceful protest, the protesters sought a direct confrontation. “Our actions are completely legal, sometimes even passive. The Bulgarian police were not confronted by citizens, but by ultras brought from the province,” he added. As a result, many of the colleagues were injured – more than 27 people were hospitalized and more than 100 employees were treated at the scene – because a spicy spray was used against them, “said the director of SDVR.

He asked “which civilian is going to protest with a gas mask, mask and hot spray” and added that the response of the Interior Ministry was a response to the instinct of self-preservation. According to Hadjiev, against the police and the gendarmerie, “metal bars, wooden stakes were used, cobblestones and stones were thrown. And yet the actions of the police were within the law. We even tried to calm down.”
