PPF Group, the company of Czech billionaire Petr Kellner, has sent documents for approval to the European Commission for the agreement with which it will acquire the US group Central European Media Enterprises (SME), reports Czech radio Prague International. BTV is also part of SME.

The decision of the European competition regulator is the last necessary step before the agreement is finalized.

By the way, it was delayed, probably due to the coronavirus pandemic. Initially, the SMEs expected their sale to be completed in June. After that didn’t happen, it was speculated that Kellner might not send the documents to the EC at all, and therefore postpone the deal to get a better price. In the end, these scenarios turned out to be wrong.

In addition to the Bulgarian media group, SME owns televisions in 4 other countries: in the Czech Republic, where it controls the leading TV station NOVA, in Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

In July, the SME explained that the sale must be completed by October 27, exactly one year after the announcement of the $ 2.1 billion deal. In our country the news was announced on October 28, 2019, the day of the local elections.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio, for his part, has called for a review of the sale of Pyme, which is part of the US company AT&T. The reason for his statement was that PPF Group and Kellner “act as China’s agents in the Czech Republic.”
