More than 90% of the people in Bulgaria do not know how long it is mandatory to use a child seat in the car, that is, until reaching a height of 150 cm or 12 years of age. At the same time, almost 20% of parents admit that they do not wear a seat belt with their older children when riding in the back seat.

The data comes from a national survey and shows the need to reach out to current and future parents by better explaining how important it is to follow safety rules. This was highlighted by the vice president of the State Road Safety Agency, Angelina Toteva, at the beginning of an information campaign in stores specializing in children’s items. The initiative belongs to the state agency and is implemented in conjunction with the stores of the Comsed chain.

Starting today, in 24 stores across the country in the section where highchairs are sold, special information panels will be posted with the most important information parents need to know: what types of highchairs exist; how they should be installed for added security; up to what age they are used and how important it is for the child to be as safe as possible in the vehicle.

“Many parents spend months choosing the best stroller. However, it is much more important for them to spend at least the same time in the high chair they will buy, because it is directly related to the child’s safety,” emphasized Angelina Toteva. According to her, the People in Bulgaria are aware of the importance of the seat, but tend to compromise, very often due to lack of awareness. Therefore, the tables contain other tips related to practical use and the importance of wearing a seat belt, for example.

The longer your child travels in an upside down seat, the greater their safety, experts advise. Another rule of thumb is that if the child or infant is removed from the seat, the vehicle must stop first. The seat belt is mandatory, but until the required height is reached, the child must use a special booster seat, because otherwise the belt can injure him, it is another of the safety rules.

“More than 30,000 customers visit our stores nationwide each month, and unique visits to our website exceed 5,000 per day – they will all be able to read tips for better child safety when on the road.” Galina Gavrailova, Executive Director of Comsed, highlighted. She added that the information will be valuable not only to people planning to buy a high chair, but to all parents. “Our long-term work has convinced us that the Bulgarian father is always looking for the best for his son and I hope that with this joint initiative we will teach them useful tips and perhaps facts that they did not know until now,” he said. the director of the retail chain.

SABS hopes that other chains and specialty stores will join the initiative, and the project for the construction of the boards will be delivered for free use. Discussions with other potential partners of the initiative have already begun, it was clear at the start of the campaign.

The analysis of traffic accidents with children over the years shows that almost 2/3 of the fatal accidents with children on the road are precisely as passengers and not as pedestrians or cyclists. This requires more focused efforts to educate parents to protect their children in the car.
