The world could face an environmental catastrophe greater than the Chernobyl tragedy, warned Witold Fokin, deputy head of the Ukrainian delegation of the tripartite contact group on Donbass.

Fokin noted that the destruction of infrastructure in Donbass after the shelling has caused thousands of mines to flood, they are left “alone” and water from them can flow into local rivers and lakes, after which this contaminated water enters to the Azov region. in the Black Sea.

The chief also said that urgent work should be started on cleaning the shafts.

“Many are turning a blind eye to this, but the impending disaster could become immeasurably greater than the Chernobyl accident and cause much greater environmental damage,” Fokin concluded.

The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant took place on the night of April 26, 1986, when the reactor in Unit 4 exploded. Large amounts of radioactive substances were released into the environment.

According to the experts’ conclusions, the main reason for the incident was serious violations of the nuclear power plant’s operating standards, committed by the personnel of the fourth unit.
