Tensions in universities before the start of the academic year. The reason is the drastic increase in student fees at Alma Mater, despite the emergency situation with the coronavirus infection.
No fees for freshmen in certain majors
The greatest increase in student fees occurs in the medical universities of our country. Although higher education institutions are autonomous, it turns out that the state, and in particular the Ministry of Education, has imposed decrees imposing an increase of up to 40% in local fees. Here, however, the rectors are flexible.
The shocking increase in tuition fees at the four Bulgarian medical universities is up to 50%. It is due to a decree issued by the Council of Ministers, which obliges the management to implement it. To prevent student exits, the Plovdiv Medical University has solved the problem by reducing the administrative fees they charge. Thus, there will be no increase in some specialties and in others it will be minimal.
Veliko Tarnovo University has also found a way around the provision that could empty the Alma Mater of the ancient capital.
Fees go up at some universities
“We have reduced the rates in four of the areas. In three of the areas, the state has borne all the costs. There are 12 areas in which the rates increase, but increase by 25-30 BGN per semester,” explained Hristo Bondjolov – Rector of VTU “St. S t. Cyril and Methodius”.
Thus, in Veliko Tarnovo almost all places are already occupied, which is unprecedented for the university. However, the increase in tuition fees in Southwest Alma Mater is drastic. When asked by NOVA about the cause of this fact, the Ministry of Education replied that Minister Krassimir Valchev and the rector of SWU agreed to seek a way to reduce the fees already established for second-year students, where the increase is more drastic. . For the student Vladislav Taskov, fourth year in physical education and sports, the fee of 580 BGN per year is not a problem.

Leaving aside the problem of fees, students and university management in our country are united around the most important problem for them, how the academic year will begin on October 1, present or not.
