The Ministry of Health announced today about 78,761 confirmed cases during the last 24 hours. The previous world record, 77,638 new infections, was set by the United States on July 17, recalls AFP. The total number of cases in India, with a population of approximately 1.4 billion, has exceeded 3.5 million. The country ranks third in the world in this indicator after the United States and Brazil.

More than 25 million people are already infected with COVID-19 worldwide.

One of the reasons for the sharp increase in new cases recently is the increase in testing. Now Indian authorities are doing nearly 1 million tests a day compared to just 200,000 two months ago, BTA reported, citing AP.

948 people with coronavirus have died in India in the last 24 hours. The death toll in the country is already 63,498, the Health Ministry said, quoted by TASS. India ranks fourth in the grim statistics after the United States, Brazil and Mexico. At the current rate of around 1,000 deaths per day, the country will be up to days ahead of Mexico (63,819 deaths).
