Novak Djokovic – Milos Raonic 1-6, 6-3, 6-4
Novak Djokovic won the title at this year’s Western & Southern Open. The Serbian played a disastrous first set against Milos Raonic, but then he found his usual rhythm and thus will face the next US Open with the Masters trophy in hand.
In the first set, Raonic made the predictions of everyone who defined him as a fluffy pre-match outsider. The match started with a Raonic match, but the leader of the ranking responded in kind and tied the score. However, no one expected this to be the last game on Djokovic’s account in this set. Raonic had a great five-game winning streak (two of them to zero) and finished the set 6-1 in his favor after just 31 minutes of play.
The second set started again with a game won by Raonic, but Djokovic did not allow his opponent to break again in the result. The game went game by game at 2-2, and this time it was Djokovic who reached a decisive advance. The Serbian won three consecutive games and led 5-2, practically deciding the set in his favor. Raonic cut his lead to 3-5, but in the next game Djokovic was back on top and tied the set 6-3 in the second.
The final set began with a break by Raonic, who went ahead 2-0 and gave Djokovic just one point. However, the Serb once again showed his proverbial intransigence and got out of the difficult situation in an incredible way. The Joker made a series of four consecutive games and took control of the set, leading 4-2. Raonic narrowed the gap, but the world No. 1 again restored the two-game difference at 5-3. In the next game, the Joker was leading 15-0 and already saw the winner, but Raonic managed to win the game and stay in the match.
In the 10th game, however, Djokovic was not wrong and won the set 6-4, earning him the tournament championship title. This is the Serbian’s second trophy at the Western & Southern Open, having triumphed in 2018. Djokovic is also the first world No. 1 to win the tournament since 2012, when Roger Federer did the same.
Interestingly, Djokovic committed more double faults than Raonic (5 vs 3), and in the aces the Canadian’s superiority was very serious: 10-2. However, the Serbian’s experience spoke his word and little by little he managed to get out of the difficult situation to celebrate his return to US soil with a trophy.
Despite the painful loss, Raonic found the strength to joke during the award ceremony. “What are your stats this year?” 23-0? Honestly, if I start the year with 3-0, I’m very happy, ”said the Canadian with a wash.
The triumph in the tournament marks a historic achievement: Novak Djokovic became the first player to achieve double his call. Masters of gold. Thus, the Joker already has another solid argument in the dispute for the title of “The greatest of all time”.
