Hamilton on pole position, Ferrari didn’t skip Q2 in Belgium

Lewis Hamilton with Mercedes won qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix with a time of 1: 41.252. They were followed by Valteri Botas (Mercedes) at 0.511 and Max Verstappen with Red Bull at 0.526 from Hamilton.

The air temperature during qualifying was 16 degrees, and that of the track – 24. The probability of rain in this session was 40%.

The first on the track were Haas drivers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen. The first fastest lap in qualifying went to Grosjean – 1: 45.073.

Soon after, all the other drivers took to the track. The second fastest round was recorded by Max Vesrtapen, but Carlos Sainz improved on his achievement.

After the first 10 minutes from the start of Q1, the Mercedes drivers became leaders, led by Hamilton. Behind them were Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz, almost a second behind the world champion. Max Verstappen managed to replace Ricciardo and took third place. So far Latifi, Magnussen, Raikkonen, Vettel and Grosjean were out of the second classification.

At the end of the session, almost all the drivers took to the track and formed a lot of traffic on the track itself.

At the end of the session, Vettel managed to improve his time and was ranked 12th, and the dropouts in Q1 were Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Antonio Giovinazzi, Nicolas Latifi and Kevin Magnussen. Williams driver George Russell once again managed to get into the second phase of qualifying, even while in front of a Ferrari car. Lewis Hamilton was the fastest again.

At the beginning of Q2, all the drivers took to the track, as the Mercedes drivers were on medium tires.

The fastest lap was again for Hamilton. The Mercedes driver registered 1: 42.014, and at 0.112 was his partner Valteri Botas. Third with 0.459 was again Max Verstappen with Red Bull, followed by his Renault teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon. The Ferrari drivers were only in positions 14 and 15, more than a second and a half from the first position. Also outside the top 10 were the Racing Point competitors.

In the final minutes of Q2, the Racing Point drivers improved their times and found a place in the top 10, and the Alpha Tauri and Ferrari drivers failed to qualify for Q3. In the end, Daniel Kwiat, Pierre Gasley, Charles Leclerc, Sebastian Vettel and George Russell withdrew. Hamilton again had the fastest course in Q2.

Danil Kvyat held only 8,000th from third place.

At the beginning of Q3, all the drivers were on the track on soft tires.

The Mercedes drivers recorded the best laps again, followed by Daniel Ricciardo and Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Alex Albon. At the same time, Hamilton broke the Spa record.

In the closing minutes of the session, Verstappen regained third place and Hamilton improved the track record once again and won his 93rd pole position. Ricciardo was fourth and Albon completed the top 5.
