The folk singer is leading her first online singing class today and her students are in New York.
Thousands of miles away, across the Atlantic Ocean, Yanka Rupkina will teach New York to sing today from her apartment in Sofia.
This is the first online lesson he has taught, although there are students all over the world, from Australia to the UK.
You received an invitation from a Bulgarian woman who has lived and worked in the United States for many years. “We will do some of my songs. They probably know little about me and I will tell you part of my biography,” explains Rupkina.
“There are young American women, and there are older women who are interested,” she added, describing how sweet they are when they try to learn Bulgarian folk music or dance. “There are those who are not very musical or have never sung, but who are willing to learn the pronunciation of our lyrics accurately. It’s very sweet. You know how interesting it is for them and for me too, ”says Rupkina.
This can be considered a kind of gift for his 82nd birthday. Due to the pandemic, he did not invite many people, but he welcomed some of the companions with whom he sang in “The Mystery”. However, she never feels alone in her home in Sofia. There are three special photos on it: of Vasil Levski, of soccer player Georgi Asparuhov – Gundi, and of her late husband, national fighter Georgi Rupkin.
“I ordered them
here on the couch,
I put them
flowers. When
I go in and out
and charge me
with a positive
Energy “,
says the singer.
Choose Levski’s photo because, like her, he always follows the principle of honesty. Gundi was very good friends with her husband Georgi. “He had given me a t-shirt. She is here, even now I look at her against me”, explains Rupkina. However, there is no autograph of the great footballer. “So we did not think about those things,” laughs the folk singer. She is a good friend of the support of Gundi Velichka, who currently lives in the United States.
Yanka wept for the first time on August 15, the great feast of the Holy Mother of God. However, her mother needed more time to recover because she was a big baby. She managed to register her daughter 10 days later. That is why Rupkina celebrates her 25th birthday.
“I don’t remember celebrating it as a child,” she laughs. “We were four children then. I am the oldest, I have two sisters, Danka and Minka, and I have a brother, Goshko,” explains Rupkina. She has a photo with her younger relatives when she was 6. “I remember singing on stage then. in front of the school. They put me on a table “, laughs the singer.
When he grew up and came to Sofia to audition for the “Philip Kutev” ensemble, he began to celebrate his birthday with the other singers.
From then until now, she has known him in various parts of the world, where his talent took her. When I was 53-54, I was in London.
There the trio “Bulgarka” has a concert with the orchestra “Balkana”. At the time, their performances were organized by the band’s American businessman, who worked with Pink Floyd and many other popular bands. He then celebrated his birthday with him and the other musicians. “He had specially invited his mother from New York to London. That was the biggest surprise for me. We celebrated the evening. He had brought me some gold earrings with red hearts and a necklace,” Rupkina recalls fondly.
But this is far from his only unforgettable birthday. A few years ago, he met him with his girlfriend Roza Popova in Odessa, where Popova is the deputy ambassador of Bulgaria. “They invited me to do concerts with their bands. They went very well. It happened again that on August 25 we were free and she surprised me a lot. She ordered everything for the dinner we had with Russians, colleagues, journalists and people from the embassy” says Rupkina. Maybe I’ll go back there. Well, it will hardly be a birthday, but as Maya Neshkova sings: “Every day is a birthday,” laughs the folk singer.
Before that, it was sent to a delegation in the former USSR. “I was alone. My Russian friend had given me a little doll, which is very similar to her and her husband, his name was Sasho and he was a general,” says Rupkina. It is interesting that in the gorge he carried the flag and all the groups of 20 30 people walked behind her.
He also met an astronaut who was in town. “It was then that I realized why people get so excited when sometimes they touch our suits or when they touch us with a headscarf or a hand.
I remember how not
I could go
yourself 3 days later
tapping
The suit of
astronaut ”,
Still with emotion in her voice, the folk singer says.
“I love pilots very much, I love pilots,” he laughs. “Because I flew a lot. A friend of mine from my hometown, her name was Genka, was shouting:“ When you leave town, you just fly through the sky with these planes. When will we see you? Your house is high, there is a playground. Why don’t you buy a plane and come here alone, walk through the forest? ”, Remembers Rupkina with a smile.“ I made money, but for Bulgaria. I couldn’t win. Well, I already have enough to eat ”, the folk singer tries not to complain. However, she really flies her whole life. She was also among the passengers in the 1971 plane crash along with Pasha Hristova, Maria Neykova and Boris Gudjunov.
The singer is still alive, but with severe burns on her hands. Despite all the hardships she went through, she never lost the strength of her spirit. Including the current coronavirus pandemic. “A lot of good things can happen to a person, as well as very bad things. We must be strong to overcome it all.
I am what I am
He fell in
very different
critical situations,
sometimes i wonder how
I am alive
although I know that I am a strong man and I never lose heart. I have always tried to find a way out of those states. This is not easy at all. To overcome difficult moments, the nerves must be very strong or you have to find a way, sometimes with a pill, sometimes with a good story or song ”, advises Rupkina.
To this day, he remembers his grandmother’s words:
“And the biggest
execute the enemy
good advice, go ahead
a bite of bread
and do not close the door, because it is not known when you may need it. “” That’s right, evil goes with good and vice versa, “the folk singer agrees.
Age does not prevent Rupkina from doing what she has always done in the trio “Bulgarka” and in “Mystery”: promoting Bulgarian music around the world.
“Bulgaria has been known since then, because I have personally conducted many interviews, although at some points there were obstacles.
We were banned
before 1990 yes
we personally give
interviews
That was the system. There were escorts with us, several colonels to watch who was doing where and what. Many of us had problems, I also, because I have been crazy since I was little, but I have overcome everything. There is no falsehood with me. So no one can accuse me of anything, “Rupkina said.
It happened that they took her off a plane abroad. “I was wondering how to improve,” recalls the folk singer. “Some people told me, ‘Take care of yourself,'” he added. That is why she was late for her concert.
“I was one of the first bare-breasted to participate in the rallies after 1990, and I put my head in the bag.
They threatened me many times, but no bad things happened to me. Thank God I’m still alive, ”says Rupkina, who has been a great-grandmother to handsome blue-eyed Victor for some time.
