Turkey on August 27 “intercepted” six F-16s of the Greek Air Force over the Mediterranean. This was announced by the Turkish Ministry of Defense.

“On August 27, 2020, six F-16 aircraft belonging to Greece took off from Crete for the Republic of Cyprus and approached the region for which the international NAVTEX notification was issued. Our F-16 fighters prevented them from approaching this region. and forced them to leave the region, “the statement said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has already said that Ankara is ready by all possible means, including the military, to defend their interests in the Mediterranean, the Aegean and the Black Sea.

Previously, Turkey unilaterally began work on mineral development in the exclusive maritime zone of the Republic of Cyprus. European Union has repeatedly condemned Ankara’s actions, but the work continues to this day.

Cyprus has been de facto divided into Greek and Turkish communities since 1974. In 1983, the Turkish Cypriots unilaterally proclaimed the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”. The country is not recognized by the world community. Ankara supports the self-proclaimed state and says it is developing it based on the interests of Turkish Cypriots.
