Russia has released classified records of the world’s largest nuclear explosion, Reuters reported. The recordings were made during the detonation of the bomb nicknamed “King Bomb” in 1961.

The hydrogen bomb has the power of 50 million tons of conventional explosives, it was detonated in October 1961 during a test carried out at 4,000 meters above the New Earth archipelago behind the Arctic Circle.

Recordings released today show a huge fireball and a 60 km high mushroom cloud that appeared after the explosion. The recordings were made with cameras shooting from different angles, located on the ground and on two Soviet aircraft. “Tests of an extremely powerful hydrogen charge have confirmed that the USSR has thermonuclear weapons with a power of 50 megatons, 100 megatons and more,” said a voice heard on the recording.

The documentary was first published online last week by Russia’s Rosatom nuclear agency as part of the events marking the 75th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry. “King Bomb” ran from 1956 to 1961, at a time when the Soviet Union was competing in arms with the United States.

The bomb used in the experiment is estimated to be 3,300 times more destructive than the weapon that destroyed Hiroshima. The 30-minute documentary shows all stages of the experiment, including transporting the 26-ton bomb by train and measuring the radioactivity after the explosion.
