The municipality of Sofia is planning an intermodal center on the ring road on the Simeonovski elevator, which will bring together a bus station, an elevator, a subway and an intermediate parking lot, and if implemented, it will be unique in the world, said today to BNT the chief architect of Sofia, Zdravko Zdravkov.
Regarding criticism that the extension of the subway to the elevator serves the interest of the shops and malls in the area, Zdravkov emphasized that he is looking to the future, as many more people will live and work there.
Looking ahead, the future extensions of the third subway line are also connected, connecting Slatina and the District Hospital and “Lyulin” with the ring road. Its implementation will begin when the need for its launch is established.
As a major project for the future, Zdravko Zdravkov pointed to the extension of the Sofia Ring Road from Bulgaria Blvd. to the connection to the Struma Expressway near the Lyulin district. This is the most complicated route on the entire ring road and more than BGN 500 million is needed, which must be found by the state, Zdravkov said.
He explained the high price with the construction of a tunnel (between Bratya Buxton Blvd. and Tsar Boris III Blvd.), an overpass, roundabouts, and the reconstruction of the Suhodol Dam. “Such a facility has not been built in Bulgaria. It goes through a difficult urban environment,” said Sofia’s chief architect. He clarified that the project has been ongoing for a long time.
A month ago, the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, announced that Prime Minister Boyko Borissov promised to provide funds for the construction of the last stretch of the Sofia Ring Road.
Commenting on the Sveta Nedelya Square reconstruction project, won by Italian architecture firm Fuchsas, Zdravkov said it was unique because a world office would leave its signature in the urban environment of Sofia. Regarding the criticisms, he pointed out that they were delivered to the authors, who would comply with most of the requests: preserve the trees and review the approaches to patriarchy. The modified project will be presented in late June.
Commenting on the idea of making Saborna street a pedestrian street, arch. Zdravkov announced that it will be mainly repaired in the part next to Lege Street, but today a temporary transformation option will be presented with the elimination of some of the cars to reach the pedestrian route from the National Palace of Culture to the city garden . In response to a question, the chief architect announced that there are ideas for the introduction of order and a common vision of the establishments, but the changes are delayed due to the crisis that has affected their owners.
