28,623 people found work during the declared state of emergency in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic (March 13 to May 13, 2020).

During the last business day alone, 1,200 unemployed people have been employed in the labor market, according to data from the Employment Agency, cited by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy.

The NSI reports an annual increase in the total income of Bulgarian households in the first quarter of 2020. A study shows that they are double that of consumer spending.

The average income per household member increased in the period January – March 2020 by 12.7% compared to the same quarter of 2019, reaching BGN 1,712, while total expenses increased by 5.9% to BGN 1,486.

The highest relative participation in the first quarter of the year had income from wages (58.5%), followed by income from pensions (27.7%) and from self-employment (5.6%). Compared to the first quarter of 2019, the relative proportion of wages income increased by 0.9 percentage points, the proportion of income from social benefits and subsidies, by 0.5 percentage points, while the proportion of pension, social payments and benefits decreased by 0.2 percentage points, and self-employment decreased by 0.8 percent.

In nominal terms, salary income increased in the first quarter of the year to 1002 from BGN 874 a year earlier (a jump of 14.6%), pension income increased to 473 from BGN 424 (an increase of 11.6 %), those who are self-employed remain unchanged at the BGN 96 level, and earnings from social benefits and allowances increase from BGN 35 to BGN 50 (increase by 42.2%).

At the same time, total expenditure per person per household increased in the January – March 2020 period by 5.9% compared to the previous year, reaching BGN 1,486.

The relative majority in the first quarter was occupied by food expenses (31.0%), followed by housing (17.4%), taxes and social security (14.7%), and transportation and communications (11.6%).

The relative share of spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 0.8 percentage points compared to the first three months of 2019, the share of spending on health care by 0.9 percentage points, and spending on taxes and social security, at 0, 7, while the relative part of expenses related to housing decreases by 0.8 percentage points.
