ACTS announces journalistic investigations of various media because it supports freedom of expression.
The investigation that the police in Catalonia is carrying out against Prime Minister Boyko Borissov for the scandal, which became known as “Barcelonagate”, has not yet ended. That’s what they said before “Now” from the service press center. Details of the investigation were also denied, as it is still pending.
The Barcelonagate scandal erupted with renewed vigor in late February, when the Spanish newspaper El Periódico published an article related to real estate and businesses in Barcelona, which the Spanish authorities were verifying for money laundering. The publication published a three-page investigation alleging that the Catalan police Mossos d´Esquadra and the specialized anti-corruption unit of the Spanish prosecution are investigating whether Prime Minister Boyko Borissov is involved in an “international money laundering scheme”, which since 2013 5 million euros entered Spain through two companies registered in Barcelona: Numin Invest SL and Emma BGS SL. The two companies are related to former model Borislava Yovcheva.
However, as early as May 2019, Elena Yoncheva, who is now an MEP, referred the case to the then Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov. The prosecution did not achieve results in this inspection, but after the publication in “El Periódico”, filed a complaint. However, for 2 months, there has been no information on what is being done under this inspection, Sega recalls.
The file, formed after the prosecution referred to the publication in Spanish, is in the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office. The electronic record of files shows that on April 3, the special prosecutor’s office assigned the inspection to another agency. However, it is not clear who he is. It could be the KPKONPI anti-corruption commission, it could be the National Revenue Agency or another institution.
The oldest inspection, that of the Yoncheva signal, is in the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s Office. According to electronic records from the state prosecutor’s office, on August 22, 2019, the prosecutor’s office transferred the ball to the anti-corruption commission KPKONPI, which is now headed by Tsatsarov. There the traces of the inspection are lost.
