The brutal assassination attempts on Manol Velev and Yordan Dinov could be decisive for the fate of game boss Vasil Bozhkov. This was disclosed to BLIC by sources from the Office of the Specialized Prosecutor, who is monitoring the investigation in both cases.
The husband of the two-time Olympic medalist and veteran BSP deputy Vessela Lecheva was shot in the back of the head by an unknown assassin in his office at 3 Mizia Street in Sofia on July 11, 2007.

According to Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev, the new investigation into serious criminal offenses against Vasil Bozhkov began after open evidence at this address during searches of the gambling chief’s offices and properties, conducted late last week. Then one of the wealthiest Bulgarians came under the scrutiny of investigators over a matter of hundreds of millions of levs, related to the “National Lottery” lottery game and the hidden control of the State Gambling Commission. Vasil Bozhkov, who left Bulgaria on his private plane, was charged in the absence of seven counts, including leading an organized crime group, coercion, extortion, attempted bribery of an official, and incitement to commit a crime in the line of duty. .
At this stage, the prosecutor’s office did not provide details on the new directions for the investigation, accusing Bozhkov of being guarantor of the mafia executions. However, forensic scientists recheck the facts and evidence surrounding the shooting against Manol Velev.
The then adviser to the president, Georgi Parvanov, was greeted by an assassin, who followed him up the stairs and shot at point-blank range from the back of his head.
Velev was taken to Pirogov, where doctors removed the bullet from his head, but unfortunately they were unable to return him to normal life. From then until today, Manol Velev remains in a coma, and is cared for by his wife, who has equipped a special medical room at her home.
According to acquaintances, the investigation was not completed at that time, and criminalists deliberately or ignorantly ignored the version of “Vasil Bozhkov”, although it was one of the main ones. Vessela Lecheva herself unexpectedly testified that Vasil Bozhkov was probably behind her husband’s murder. She told investigators that her husband had been shot because he interfered with Bozhkov’s gambling business. Before the shooting, Manol Velev ran several casinos in Sofia and the country, linked by the Sesame chain.
Just half an hour after one of Vessela Lecheva’s first interrogations, Bozhkov telephoned her and offered her psychiatric help because she “spoke to the police like crazy and mentioned her name.” Following this elegant threat, the shooting champion is said to have withdrawn her testimony against the billionaire. Vasil Bozhkov is also suspected of being the guarantor of the murder of Blagoevgrad resident Yordan Dinov. Months before he was shot, Dinov began opening “customer service centers” across Bulgaria, where in practice bets were accepted for football matches. During this period, there were several actions in the country against illegal gambling in matches held by the Interior Ministry, since at that time the law even processed Internet sites for bets registered in countries outside and outside the European Union. In practice, Yordan Dinov’s sportsbooks (pictured below) were the only competition for Eurofootball. The Blagoevgrad resident symbolically rented the premises in the vicinity of the Eurofootball points and gave higher odds of games than Vasil Bozhkov’s gambling company. Before his murder, Yordan Dinov was repeatedly summoned to the police, who investigated him for “black lottery.”
