Nosocomial coronavirus infections are proving to be the new challenge for doctors and patients. Cases of widespread infection after treatment have already been reported in several individual hospital clinics. One of the medical institutions where there are infected doctors is the “St. Ivan Rilski” hospital in Sofia.
The date is May 10. Visits to the medical institution are not allowed. On the other hand, the rooms are full, after the resumption of planned operations and procedures, “St. Ivan Rilski” is working at full speed. However, the hallways of the wards are empty and silent because all the patients are separated in their rooms.

Doctors also work on a different regimen. Due to the need to protect themselves more, they often cross paths without knowing each other: glasses, masks, space suits and long aprons are already part of the landscape. Professor Zhelev is waiting for the NOVA team in front of the room where he works and takes off his equipment only during the interview. He says he is angry with those who underestimate the problem of the pandemic.
“Personally, I was a little upset because in the context of all efforts, there are few people who don’t meet the standards and requirements and therefore complain about things that are fun.” Their way of life is incomparable with ours, like a change, “says Professor Zhelev.
Just two weeks ago, news broke that two hospital wards were being urgently sealed for disinfection due to a new confirmed case of coronavirus.
Parallel to the internal inspection, it was clear that there were 13 infected doctors. The hospital’s reaction was quick: the way of working changed into a new regime that was several times stricter. Patient zero is considered to be a patient who has passed through the two wards in question. Professor Zhelev himself treated him. However, the doctor is not among those infected. He explains that the reason is personal discipline, which he himself has imposed.
Both disinfected rooms are currently open to patients. The rooms in them are full. But fear lurks among patients, not because they are worried about going into sealed rooms, but because the COVID-19 panic begins after leaving home.

But in the oncology room, patients have no choice but to postpone treatment. That is why it is up to the team to take care of them and prevent them from becoming infected with the coronavirus. To make sure there is no risk, Dr. Todorova herself, who is monitoring her condition today, has already performed several PCR tests, a requirement introduced by the hospital administration. Each admitted patient is also evaluated. Therefore, sure that she is, as they say, “negative”, the young doctor visits them calmly.
However, the coronavirus is also remembered here. She is currently undergoing treatment at home and is quarantined by a hospital nurse who continues to test positive for COVID-19. She is believed to have been infected outside the hospital while on leave.
Meanwhile, a brief tour of Professor Zhelev’s wards shows the hospital in a whole new light. There are even jokes on the floors that security and access measures are like NASA’s.
