Yoso Sarchadjiev on the curves of life.

The great actor turned 75 at his home in the town of Kirchevo, he will be there until September

I deeply regret that today’s theater goers, especially those on stage, cannot see Yosif Sarchadjiev, who was forced to leave the theater after a stroke.

I am not talking about his dramatic life after 1990, which has no equal in terms of attacks of fate and surprising resistance to his psyche and body. I refer to his roles in the Bulgarian Army Theater, where Yosso was part of Leon Daniel’s company and favorite actor: Shakespeare’s “Vain efforts of love”, “Mr. Puntilla and his servant Matty” of Brecht, “Waiting for Godot. ” by Beckett, who began the penetration of the absurd theater in Bulgaria.

“Life is a dream” by Ivan Dobchev was inserted into this rosary of magnificent papers. A show that in 1981/1982 felt how this decade would end and in the conditions of the fierce dictatorship of “real socialism” showed the rebellious man, intoxicated by the fire of the rebellion itself, but with no idea how to live after the victory.

In 1990 Yoso joined the democratic forces and, along with his friend and colleague Joro Novakov, toured villages and sections to see how the voting was going for the first democratic elections on June 10. A day before the vote, Yoso wrote in his diary:

“They will come true tomorrow

dreams and will collapse

Destinations

Tomorrow is election day! The first free elections! God what a year! It should not be described! Describe how a nation wakes up from torpor! How old stereotypes seem to be shattered. How one universe is replaced by another! Drunkenness of a nation! … “. When journalists and crowds of people awaiting the results of the elections entered the electoral study in front of the National Palace of Culture, Yoso tried to present the cases of manipulations in favor of the BSP in the Pazardzhik region. However, the People from the BSP, much hotter in that battle, hinder and ridicule him. The actor becomes extremely nervous and finally cries out for helplessness and injustice. This scene was broadcast on television in the following days and taken out of context as a mockery of Sarchadjiev. After the elections, won by the BSP, the student demonstrations, protest demonstrations, strikes began.Yoso travels around the strikers, suffering the abyss between dreams and the pragmatic reality in which people and UDF leaders hope , they doubt, they contradict themselves.

At home

Yosso and his wife Raina

emigration

But events are ahead: BSP President Petar Mladenov resigns, the City of Truth is founded, the Party House burns down. In 1993 Yoso, Raina and their son Proletsin left the capital and settled in the southernmost part of our Black Sea coast, the town of Sinemorets. The theater is over. Today Sinemorets is conquered by people with a lot of money who are not interested in the inviolability of the dunes and forests that prevent them from organizing their properties.

But when the Sarchadzhievs come here, there is solitude and silence, there are no concrete buildings. Raina liked the place before 1989, when she filmed a movie in Strandzha about the so-called Republic of Youth, a Komsomol action to populate the area with youth.

In this heavenly land, Yoso becomes a different person. Little by little, he converted a cabin into a restaurant, which he called the “Blue Lion”. Above the long tables, a large vine grows and casts a shadow. He himself makes wine and brandy from the grapes. Really very tasty. Every night at eight o’clock

The salad is from the vegetables from his own garden, grown by Yosso. With pleasure he becomes a teacher and does everything by himself. They built several rooms on the edge of the shore, so that as the sea stirred and rolled its waves toward the shore, the water hit the large French windows in the living room.

However, Yoso is not there. When I stopped to see him in Sinemorets, he showed me his den, a large tool room called “workshop” with chicken milk. But when the weather is fine, the actor likes to go up to the roof and stay there for a long time, looking at the infinite blue of the sea, like a character from an English romantic television movie with a plot from the 19th century.

The money to build

the house is coming

in a fairy tale

In 1996, an American Jew came to Sofia, a screenwriter who ran the Hollywood studios. Looking for movie ideas and touring Eastern European countries. They leave him rummaging through the archives of the old documentary studio, and he finds Raina’s favorite movie about troubled children. She likes her style of storytelling and immediately goes to Sinemorets to meet her. She fills him with movie ideas and he promises to return. After three months he arrived at Sinemorets.

With the money from this market, the Sarchadzhievs built the house with the French windows, which stood on a large rock on the beach. At the entrance to Sinemorets, at the junction of the dirt road to Yoso and Raina’s house, a large poster was hung. It has an inscription:

“Please, nobody here

don’t visit me

I ran away from people here. Today, when Sinemorets has melted in the past, Yoso transferred his habits and abilities to the home in the town of Kirchevo, where he escaped the worries of the coronavirus. A typical country house with the obligatory vine, from whose grapes the owner makes divine brandy and wine.

When he searches with Raina for a house to escape Sofia, the actor has one thing in mind, the proximity of the Sopot dam, full of tents. Today, Yoso maintains the regime of the Bulgarian peasant and only the low table in the room, which serves as a living room and kitchen, filled with plays and notes, reveals that other types of work are done here.

In recent years, Yoso Sarchadjiev has done quite well with management commitments. Proof of this are the performances that are performed intelligently, with excellent work with the actors and that the public likes, for example, “Miss Julia” by Strindberg at the 199 Theater (with Joanna Bukovska-Davidova and Kalin Vrachanski) , “Misunderstood Civilization” at the Stara Zagora Theater. The actor returned to the stage for several years, after the Burgas theater offered him a role in its production. He played a magnificent role of King Beranger in Ionesco’s “The King Dies” and the entire hall of the Military Theater during the visit of Burgas citizens got up and applauded him for a long, long time. This role earned Yoso the Askeer Prize in 1998. The director of production is Borislav Chakrinov, director of the theater in Burgas. His custody of Yosso is a moral and social act that helps the actor to reintegrate into society.

Yosso, who turned 75 on May 2, is comfortable in the theater and agrees to take on the lead roles in Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Merchant Traveler” and Strindberg’s “The Father” directed by Chakrinov. Then Yoso tries to direct and sees that a quality job is coming out. Although he is now locked in his home in the town of Kirchevo until September due to the spread of the virus in Sofia, Yoso is considering a theater after the quarantine. He doesn’t like comedy, he’s used to thinking about drama. Nice and deep drama. As in life.
