One of the NBA and Chicago Bulls legends Denis Rodman revealed details about his friendship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his trip to that country in 2013. The basketball player was invited to visit the country with showmen from the Harlem Globetrotters after teammate Michael Jordan refused to leave.
The 58-year-old former basketball player recounted his meeting with Kim Jong Un in an interview for boxing legend Mike Tyson’s podcast and revealed about a party hosted by the North Korean leader, where the two got drunk.
“When they asked me to go to North Korea, I said, ‘Okay, yes, North Korea, I’m going to go’ because I thought I was going to sign autographs and play basketball. I didn’t know anything about North Korea. A terrible fool. No? I told my agent that I would go, as long as it was safe, and so on. It was great when you get off the plane, there is a red carpet, everyone is in a suit, you walk and there are 80 people sitting around the wall and I am in the middle asking me, ‘Are you happy in North Korea? At one point everyone sat down, I sat down and he started talking to me in Korean. There were translators and he asked, “Do you like my country?” And I said, “Yes, it’s fine, it’s fine,” Rodman said of his visit to North Korea.
Kim Jong Self revealed to him that he had initially asked Michael Jordan, and then Rodman was invited as backup. “Michael probably said to himself, there’s no way I’m going.”
Rodman gets along very well with Kim Jong Un, and then is invited to an interesting sequel to the night. “We stop and talk about basketball all the time.” The party ended and then he said, “We’ll be happy to come back, we like your company. We have dinner together, some karaoke and some vodka, some girls and so on.
