The Orthodox Church today celebrates Lazarovden Church Day, which is always the penultimate Saturday before Easter. On the Christian church calendar, the festival is linked to one of the most exciting evangelical stories: the resurrection of Lazarus, who lived in the city of Bethany, near Jerusalem.

According to the gospel, when the Savior is in the lands beyond the Jordan River, Lazarus becomes ill and dies. When the Messiah returns, he raises the dead on the fourth day of his funeral in gratitude for his hospitality.

According to medieval manuscripts, Lazar lived for 30 years in strict fasting and abstinence and was proclaimed the first bishop of the city of Kittion on the island of Cyprus.

On Lazarus day, the church celebrates with a festive liturgy the resurrection of Lazarus, as well as the memory of the Bulgarian Saint Martyr Lazar, martyred and assassinated on April 23, 1802.

According to the Bulgarian popular tradition, Lazarovden or Lazaritsa is the day that marks the transformation of adolescent girls into girls for marriage.

On this day, groups of six to seven girls, 10 to 16 years old, dressed in party clothes or wedding dresses and tied with crowns and dolls, walk through the houses of the village. They sing ritual songs for each member of the family, praising children, the elderly, youth, girls, young women, girlfriends, as well as shepherds, cattle, boyfriends. The hosts donate eggs and money to them.

It is believed that the house into which Lazarus entered and sang will be happy throughout the year. Lazarkas cross forests, rivers and meadows. With a song they enter the fields and want a rich harvest of green wheat.

Lazar, Lazo, Lacho, Lachezar and others have a name day.
