Brazil recorded a record number of deaths from COVID-19 in one day yesterday, Reuters reported.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, 6,935 new cases of coronavirus have been registered and 600 have died since Monday night. The sad past record of 474 deaths dates back to April 28, BTA reports.

The total number of people infected since the beginning of the epidemic in the country reached 114,715, and that of those who died from COVID-19-7921.

48,221 people have been cured of the disease caused by the new coronavirus, according to data from the ministry on its Twitter page, TASS reported. Health authorities indicate that 1.5 thousand deaths have not yet been clarified, which may also be related to the infection.

The epicenter of the infection in the country is the state of Sao Paulo and its namesake capital, where more than 21 million people live. More than 34,000 infected and more than 2,800 deaths have been registered in the region. It is followed by Rio de Janeiro with 12.5 thousand infected and more than 1.1 thousand deaths.

The Maranhão state capital, Sao Luis, yesterday became the first major Brazilian city to introduce quarantine, the Associated Press reported. The decision was made in hopes of preventing the pandemic from overloading the health system of one of the poorest states in the country. More than 4,500 coronavirus cases and 271 deaths have been confirmed in Maranhão.
