A BMW supercar? At another time

The BMW Vision M Next concept will not become a production version. The Vision M Next project, conceived by the Bavarians as the ideological successor to the i8 hybrid and the M1 supercar, will be frozen for several reasons.

Last year’s BMW Vision M Next concept was a supercar with hybrid power, which was first to replace the hybrid i8 model, and secondly to become the ideological successor to the M1 sports car produced by the Bavarians from 1978 to 1981.

However, according to the BMW Blog, citing its own sources in concern, BMW eventually stopped developing a new hybrid supercar. According to brand informants, the project was frozen for several reasons. First of all, BMW management considers it too risky.

Analysts’ projected sales volume may not even cover the cost of developing a supercar, let alone the profit. Furthermore, the coronavirus pandemic inevitably makes adjustments to the plans of all automakers, forcing them to save as much money as possible at such a difficult time.

Finally, the Bavarians say that the M8 handles the role of a supercar pretty well too and that they don’t need another one. BMW may return to the project later, when more favorable times come in the auto industry, but this, it seems, will not be soon.
