This is demonstrated by data from a nationally representative survey conducted by the Trend Research Center on behalf of 24 Chasa, in which 1,008 Bulgarian adults were surveyed between August 29 and September 5.

79% consume homemade or cultivated products, only 20% do not. The data shows that as age increases, the proportion of consumers of household products increases.

In small towns and villages, the percentage of people who put homemade food on their table is higher than in regional towns and the capital.

More often

the people eats

pickles – 32%,

compotes – 28%, canned vegetables / greens – 25%. Among the favorite homemade products of Bulgarians are also lyutenitsa, jam, sauerkraut, brandy, meat, eggs, dairy products, etc.

Half of the respondents claim to be involved in the cultivation or preparation of homemade products. The other half, 49%, no. With age, the proportion of people who participate in these activities increases. 81% of the people who live in the villages share that they participate in the cultivation or elaboration of homemade products. In the capital, this participation is 25%.

The study tested several claims related to homemade products. 83% say they consume them because they think they are better than the ones in the store, and only 8% disagree.

The reason 81% prefer their own products to the table is because they know what they contain.

For almost two-thirds of Bulgarians, the preparation and consumption of homemade winter food

comes out

cheaper

For 27%, this is not a determining factor.

76% eat homemade products because they remind them of the taste of childhood. 12% disagree. This group includes a higher proportion of young people.

Almost three-quarters say they consume these products because they have a place to get them and who can produce them. Equity participation is less (50%) compared to other settlements.

Otherwise, 55% of Bulgarians say that they prepare winter food.

Again, in towns and small towns, the proportion of cooks is higher.

66% of young people dominate the culture of homemade food

Consumers are convinced that these foods and winter foods are of better quality and save money

EVELINA SLAVKOVA

The high levels of consumption of homemade products and winter foods are not a big surprise as a sociological result. The data provides a good starting point for the eating habits of today’s Bulgarians, but also for preserving traditions in this regard.

In general, we can say that this cultural characteristic of Bulgarian is alive. The modern lifestyle, the abundance of food products in the shops have not erased the usual winter food preparation for Bulgarians and their preference for the consumption of homemade products.

However, there is a specific point in this regard that is important to keep in mind. In small towns and villages, where mostly older people live, the consumption of homemade products and winter foods is largely a tradition. At the same time it is and

cheaper

road

to live

Almost two thirds of Bulgarians say they consume homemade products because it is cheaper for them. 86% of the villagers say so.

The specificity comes from the fact that people with higher material status, who live in big cities or in the capital, also consume homemade products and winter foods. To some extent this is related to tradition, there is someone who prepares it, etc. At the same time, there is a connection with the culture created in recent years that this food is of better quality than what we buy in the store. Even the large food distribution chains are guided by this understanding and advertise some of their products as homemade, produced in a certain locality, in order to increase their quality in the eyes of the consumer and, consequently, the demand.

Up to 83% of Bulgarians share the opinion that they consume

Homemade

prepared

food because they are

Best Quality

of those in the store. That is, the preparation of traditional homemade products and winter foods is no longer related only to the material situation of Bulgarians and traditions, but also to the formation of a new consumer culture for the quality of the food we consume.

The data shows another important point. Homemade products and winter foods are not “modernized.” Pickles, compotes, jams, lyutenitsa, sauerkraut, etc. traditionally made products remain.

A difference is reported between the youngest, who are more distant in participating in the process of preparing homemade and winter foods, but at the same time they do not move away from their consumption. 66% of young people between 18 and 29 years old consume these products because

is there someone for them

produced them

The big question is whether these traditions will survive for 10 or 15 years. And if the change of generations will not erase this specific culture of the Bulgarian “jar”.
