BTS Army has done it: The new video of the K-pop idols for “Dynamite” has set a new YouTube record for views in the first 24 hours of release.
The upbeat, dance-y and live music video from BTS was released on YouTube on Friday 21st August at 12pm ET / 1pm KST. By 8:35 a.m. ET (9:35 a.m. KST on Saturday), “Dynamite” had recorded more than 86.4 million views on YouTube. That has the advantage for the previous record holder: Blackpink’s “How You Like That”, which two months ago showed an official number of 86.3 million times in the first 24 hours.
What’s more, BTS – with its extraordinarily passionate fanbase (aka BTS Army) – still has almost three and a half hours left to pave its way with “Dynamite”, and may even mark the 100-million view.
‘Dynamite,’ the band’s first song entirely in English, reached # 1 within 12 hours of its debut. 1 trending spot on YouTube. The video also set a record for the most-watched YouTube Premiere with more than 3 million live viewers at a time (with official numbers yet to be released by YouTube).
YouTube’s 24-hour viewing method has become a benchmark in the music business for rights and promotion. In response to some promoters who gambled the system, YouTube changed its methodology for YouTube Music Charts in September 2019 to no longer count paid ads in 24-hour counts, which it said would best reflect authentic fan engagement.
Note that BTS has previously held the 24-hour viewing record several times, most recently with the April 2019 release of “Boy With Luv” featuring Halsey (74.6 million views in the first one-day period). The “Dynamite” vid was directed by Yong Seok Choi of production company Lumpens, who also directed “Boy With Luv.”
The BTS TV performance premiere of “Dynamite” will take place at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, scheduled for August 30 at 8 pm ET / PT.
