Bryson DeChambeau in his new distance: ‘Sorry, Mister Ross’

Playing for the fourth week in a row and achieving a streak of top-10 results, Bryson DeChambeau has no plans to curb his aggressive approach this week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

DeChambeau will become the betting favorite at the Detroit Golf Club, having turned the newly discovered weight into additional distance and lower scores. This week, he’ll have protein shakes and eat a lot of steak and potatoes in Motor City, where he also hopes to lean on his driver to carve an old-school design, Donald Ross.

DeChambeau is second in driving distance this season, averaging more than 320 yards, and he hopes that trend will continue in a design that has many tree-lined fairways but few penalty areas at stake.

“I haven’t played on both sides yet, so it seems like it’s pretty tight, really hard,” said DeChambeau. “I think there are a lot of bunkers around 290 (yards), so I hope I can clear them out of the game. So sorry, Mr. Ross, but, you know, it is what it is.”

DeChambeau’s apologetic tone is not surprising, as he seeks to continue a streak of six consecutive results among the top 10 dating back to Riviera in February. It will be his first look at Ross’ work in Detroit, which dates back to 1899. After last year’s ultra-low scores and a winning total of 25 below, it seems likely that his aggressive strategy will pay wide dividends, hard or not hard. .

“I like the style of the courses. It seems to fit me well. They are like the style of a country club,” said DeChambeau. “I grew up at Belmont Country Club, which is very similar to that style, of course, so I feel comfortable with it. I really enjoy those kinds of courses and I feel like I thrive on them, so this course is no different.”
