Bryson DeChambeau cards 10 in hole at Memorial, fails court

DUBLIN, Ohio – Bryson DeChambeau had his worst hole score when he had a quintuple-bogey 10 on the 15th hole par 5 during the second round of the Memorial Tournament on Friday.

To make matters worse, the score led DeChambeau safely inside the cut line to miss the weekend at Muirfield Village.

DeChambeau, who has always been in the headlines recently with his ability to drive the ball over 400 yards, hit his tee shot in the stream to the left of the fairway. Instead of putting the ball back into play from the rough, DeChambeau, who was still 289 yards from the pin, tried to use his 3 wood.

Bad decision, since that shot went out of bounds.

DeChambeau then hit a provisional ball in case he was able to find the previous shot. That ball also went out of bounds.

Eventually he succeeded in keeping the ball in bounds with his 3 wood in his fourth crack, but the ball settled in the thick, short stream, still 40 yards from the hole.

DeChambeau, who was about to hit his eighth shot, then found his third shot against a metal fence. He tried to defend his case against a rules official that the ball was still in play. The rules officials, however, determined that the ball was out of play.

Clearly frustrated by the ruling, DeChambeau picked up that ball and then hit shot No. 8 on the green. He two put a 10 on the card.

DeChambeau had never posted a worse score than an 8 in a PGA Tour hole before Thursday’s quintuple bogey. The 10th dropped him from 1 in the tournament to 6 onwards. He finished with a birdie in his final hole, but the damage was already done and he ended his career at the Memorial with 73-76 rounds. He left without commenting.
