Italy’s brown bear has been recaptured after a second escape of the year from a wildlife park.
Fox News previously reported that the 4-year-old bear escaped from Castellar Wildlife Park on July 27 by climbing over a 13-foot metal barrier and three electric fences. He spent 42 days in exile before officials in the northern Italian province of Trentino finally caught the bear again on Monday.
The bear is named M49 but is named “Papillon” after the 1973 movie Escape from Prison starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.

Province officials said the bear has lost weight in the wild, allowing it to slip on its radio collar and make it more difficult to track. Despite losing weight, the bear is in good health when veterinarians return to the park.
Papillon has now escaped three times. The UPI report said they were recaptured in April after falling loose last year. But within hours of being caught, he fled again with the female bear.

The park is strengthening its bear enclosure to prevent further escapes.
As the BBC previously reported, alpine brown bears are considered endangered species, with less than 100 people remaining in the province.

The European Union has worked to restore the bear population, but there has been little controversy over the animals, according to the report. A bear attacked two men walking down a mountain in Trentino in June.
And in May, a disturbing encounter with a bear was recorded on video, when a 12-year-old boy in one province was shown the way down a mountain, with a bear flying behind a child in the same province.

“I believe the bear behaves well,” the boy told the Italian news network RI after the incident.
U.P.I. In the Papillon case, officials said they did not believe he had any encounters with the fugitives but was responsible for some of the property damage, the report said.
