Brockton Mayor Responds to 300+ Celebrations at Park Amid Coronavirus Pandemic – NBC Boston

Brockton officials are taking action and giving a warning after they said a sporting event in a city park over the weekend turned into a massive party.

The incident at a playground in Ash Street allowed 30 people through the city, but officials say more than 300 turned up.

Participants said it started as a football event, but a major volleyball tournament took over shortly thereafter and that is when the park became full.

“Everyone was sitting right next to each other and it was not enough distance as the 6-foot recommendation,” said presenter Alfonso Cruz.

Neighbors said there was hardly any social distance and many drank, prompting Mayor of Brockton to speak about the meetings he says are unacceptable.

“I have asked the Brockton police to break this up, no question,” said Mayor Robert Sullivan. “We have not gone far enough to issue fines, and I still say that because I will not care, but we are not a rich community.”

Brockton schools are already starting at a complete distance now that the city is in the yellow “moderate risk” category for cases of coronavirus. Sullivan said that if these meetings continue, the city could soon be in the red.

‘It’s about. It’s frustrating and it’s really scary, “Sullivan said.

After what happened over the weekend, the city of Brockton stopped issuing permits for events. The mayor said they can also bring back the pandemic premise if people do not follow the rules.

The woman who snapped the image and shared it on social media said it was so amazingly reckless that she could not believe what she saw Saturday night in Boston Harbor.
