Breonna Taylor: Kentucky AG met Taylor’s family for the first time more than 150 days after her death

Cameron’s office said in a statement he was “grateful” to hold the meeting, which included Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, sister, aunt, family potters and a local activist.

“The meeting provided an opportunity for Attorney General Cameron to personally express his condolences to the family,” the bureau said. “The investigation remains ongoing, and our Office of Special Prosecutors continues to verify all the facts in the case to determine the truth.”

Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT, was shot and killed in the early morning of March 13 by Louisville Police in her apartment and murdered in her apartment. None of the officers involved has been charged with a crime.

Lonita Baker, a lawyer for the family, said at a news conference Thursday that Cameron told her he had not met with the family before because he did not want it to interfere with the investigation. Cameron told her that investigators were awaiting an FBI ballistic report, such as scheduled interviews and re-interviews with witnesses, according to Baker.

“He did not give a timeline, however, it is our position that we will not wait forever,” she said. “We want this resolved quickly and accurately so that Mrs Palmer and the family can get some answers, as it relates to the murder of Breonna Taylor.”

Ben Crump, a civil rights lawyer representing the Taylor family as well as Flo Floyd’s family, said he hoped prosecutors would be filed against the officers for 200 days after her murder.

“We expect charges to be filed sooner rather than later for those responsible for the death and execution of Breonna Taylor,” he said.

Flawed police raid led to Taylor’s death

A CNN review of the shooting on March 13 found that police assumed Taylor was only at home when she was in fact accompanied by a friend who was legally armed. The decision to push forward with a high risk, forced entry under dubious circumstances contributed to the fatal outcome.
An important statement from officers contributed to the tragic death of Breonna Taylor

Her friend, Kenneth Walker, said he shot at what he believed to be an intruder from the house who had broken down the door. Three officers then returned fire, killing Taylor, the CNN review found.

The chaotic scene that was amplified at night by an officer accused of shooting his own department ‘blindly’ 10 rounds into Taylor’s apartment from a patio outside. The officer, Brett Hankison, has since been fired and is appealing for his termination.

The officers did not wear body cameras, police said.

The murder has received renewed attention following the murder of George Floyd’s Minneapolis police, and widespread protests by Black Lives Matter in recent months have called for people to “say their name.”
In May, the Kentucky Attorney General was appointed a special prosecutor in the case and the FBI opened an investigation into the shooting.

Family attorneys meet with Mayor Louisville

On Thursday, Crump said the family’s attorneys also held a “positive, productive” meeting with Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and the city attorney on Wednesday.

Crump and Baker “did not hold back any punches,” he said, challenging Fischer to end the officers and work with Protestants instead of restricting their rights.

“It was intense, long meetings, but we thought it was productive,” Crump said.

Taylor’s mother thanks those who have supported her and her family over the past five months.

Oprah's O Magazine sets up billboards throughout Louisville and calls for action in the Breonna Taylor case

“At this point, it’s bigger than Breonna. It’s bigger than just that Black lives. It’s about bridging the gaps between us and the police. It’s about bringing the communities back. It’s about just being there for each other. to stand up, “she said.

“There absolutely must be no other Breonna Taylor. Everywhere.”

Activists across the country have been pushing for attention to be paid to Taylor and her cause.

A portrait of Taylor was featured on the cover of the September issue of Oprah Winfrey’s “Oh, The Oprah Magazine”, the first time in the history of the magazine that anyone other than Winfrey has been on the cover.
Last week, the magazine put up billboards around Louisville and asked the officers involved in their murder to be arrested and charged. The magazine put up 26 billboards – one for each year of her life.

“We need some megaphone we use to call for justice,” Winfrey said in an article in her magazine announcing the billboards. “And that’s why Breonna Taylor is on the cover of O Magazine. I call for justice in her name. The September issue honors her and every other Black woman whose life has been taken too soon.”
